Advertising platforms are giving AI more control over how paid media is delivered. The latest development is in ChatGPT Ads, where creative enhancements will allow OpenAI to adapt advertising messages to suit individual conversations.
From 30 October 2026, creative enhancements will be switched on by default for new and existing self-serve ChatGPT Ads campaigns. That means headlines and descriptions could be rewritten, landing page destinations could change, and ad copy could be translated into other languages without advertisers approving every version first.
There is a clear argument for this. Advertising that responds to what someone is actually looking for could be more relevant than a single message written to cover every possible audience.
But there is a difference between allowing AI to improve how an advert is presented and giving it more freedom to change what a brand communicates.
For businesses advertising on ChatGPT, the question is not simply whether AI-generated creative could improve performance. It is whether those changes can be measured, controlled and trusted to represent the business accurately.
What are ChatGPT Ads creative enhancements?
Creative enhancements are automated changes to advertising assets that allow ChatGPT to adapt an advert using existing ad copy and landing page content.
Rather than showing precisely the headline and description an advertiser originally submitted, the platform can adjust the message to better reflect the context of a user's conversation.
OpenAI has announced the enhancements can include four main capabilities:
- Headline and description rewriting: ChatGPT can change the wording of an advert to make it more relevant to the user's apparent needs.
- Translation: Ad copy can be translated into other languages, potentially reaching audiences the advertiser has not written dedicated creative for.
- Image resizing: Creative assets can be adjusted to fit different advertising formats.
- Destination URL optimisation: Users may be directed to a different, relevant page on the advertiser's website rather than the original destination.
These changes may be prepared in advance or generated in real time in response to a conversation. Not every variation is previewed for the advertiser before it appears.
Consider a grocery delivery business advertising with the headline "Fresh groceries delivered". Depending on the conversation, ChatGPT might adapt this to "Groceries for quick weeknight dinners". It could then translate that message into Spanish for a relevant audience.
The underlying product has not changed. The advertising message has.
That distinction matters because creative is not simply a way to attract attention. It communicates a brand's positioning, sets expectations and can contain claims about pricing, availability and product benefits.
When a platform starts adapting that message automatically, the advertiser needs to understand where its control begins and ends.
Why is OpenAI introducing creative enhancements?
The case for creative automation is straightforward.
People do not use ChatGPT in the same way they use a traditional search engine. They can describe a problem in detail, explain their circumstances and refine what they need over several exchanges. Two people looking for the same product may express very different intentions.
A single headline may not be equally relevant to both.
AI-generated variations give advertisers a way to adapt their messaging without manually creating and managing a large number of separate assets. In principle, that could improve relevance, make better use of existing creative and help campaigns respond to a wider range of customer needs.
This is not an entirely new direction for digital advertising. Google Ads and Meta already offer automation across aspects of creative delivery, targeting and campaign optimisation.
The difference is the environment in which ChatGPT Ads operates.
Advertisers have less established visibility into the prompts and contexts in which their ads appear. If the platform can also change the wording and destination of an advert, understanding what audiences actually see becomes more complicated.
Automation is not necessarily the problem. The issue is whether advertisers have enough information to assess its impact and enough control to prevent unwanted changes.
What businesses need to know about ChatGPT Ads creative enhancements
1. Your approved ad copy may not be the copy people see
Creative enhancements mean that approving an original headline and description may no longer guarantee that every user sees those exact words.
That could be useful when a different formulation makes an offer clearer. However, automated rewriting can also change the emphasis of a message or remove context that the advertiser considers important.
A carefully worded product benefit, for example, might be rewritten in a way that sounds broader than intended. A headline that originally included a qualification could be shortened, leaving the qualification out of the most visible part of the advert.
Businesses should review not just their submitted ad copy, but also the content that feeds the system. Landing pages can become a source of language for generated variations, so claims buried in page copy deserve the same scrutiny as claims written directly into an advert.
2. Landing page changes could affect tracking and conversions
The ability to direct users to a different page on a website is one of the most important changes to understand.
A relevant destination could improve the user experience. Someone researching a particular product or service may benefit from landing directly on a more suitable page instead of a general homepage.
But different destinations can create measurement problems.
If a campaign relies on UTM parameters, dedicated landing pages or carefully structured conversion journeys, a change in destination could affect how traffic is attributed and how results are compared. Alternative pages may also have different forms, calls to action or conversion rates.
Before enabling enhancements, check that the pages ChatGPT could direct users to have appropriate tracking and conversion measurement in place. Do not assume that a campaign's original destination is the only page that needs to be tested.
3. Regulated industries need to be particularly careful
Businesses in the legal sector, financial services, healthcare and other regulated sectors should pay close attention to automated creative changes.
In these industries, wording can have legal or regulatory significance. Interest rates, eligibility criteria, treatment claims, pricing conditions and disclaimers may need to appear in specific contexts.
An automated rewrite could make an otherwise accurate statement misleading by removing a qualification or changing the emphasis. Translation introduces another consideration: wording that is accurate in one market may not accurately reflect an offer or its terms in another.
OpenAI's advertising policies still apply, but advertisers should not assume that the availability of creative enhancements means every generated variation has received their own required internal or regulatory approval.
If your business needs precise control over advertising claims, opt out for the relevant campaigns unless you have established that the feature can operate within your approval process.
4. Performance reporting will not tell you everything
ChatGPT Ads reporting includes campaign-level performance measures such as impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate and attributed conversions.
These metrics remain useful. The difficulty is understanding what caused a change in performance when the creative itself can change dynamically.
If click-through rate improves, was the original headline effective, or did an automatically generated variation perform better? If conversions fall, was the issue the message, the destination page or something else in the campaign?
Without a clear view of the variations being served and how they performed, it can be difficult to isolate the effect of creative enhancements.
Businesses and marketers should annotate the date the setting changes, monitor performance against their normal reporting and compare results with a suitable control where practical. They should also avoid treating a change in campaign performance as proof that creative enhancements caused it.
5. Translation creates opportunities, but also risk
Automatically translating creative could help advertisers reach audiences without having to produce every variation manually.
However, translating words is not the same as localising an advertising message.
Product availability, promotions, pricing, terminology and legal requirements can differ between markets. A translation may be linguistically accurate but still communicate an offer that is unavailable or inappropriate for the audience receiving it.
Businesses operating internationally should review their existing landing pages and market-specific terms before allowing automated translations. Where local approval is essential, retaining control over creative may be the more appropriate option.
How to opt out of ChatGPT Ads creative enhancements
OpenAI's announced default change is scheduled for 30th October 2026. Advertisers who do not want creative enhancements enabled should review their settings before that date.
According to Adthena's report, the opt-out is available through ChatGPT Ads Manager at both account and campaign level.
The practical steps are:
- Open ChatGPT Ads Manager. Sign in to the account managing your advertising campaigns.
- Review the account-level setting. Check whether creative enhancements are enabled and change the account default if you do not want them applied by default.
- Check individual campaigns. Apply campaign-level opt-outs wherever you need to retain control over the original creative, including regulated campaigns, active tests and campaigns that require formal sign-off.
- Confirm which setting takes precedence. Campaign-level settings take priority over the account default, so check the configuration of each relevant campaign rather than relying on the account setting alone.
- Verify the final configuration. Review the saved settings for both existing campaigns and any new campaigns you create.
The setting can be changed in Ads Manager at any point, so opting out does not necessarily mean making a permanent decision about the feature.
As interface labels and account options can change, check the latest instructions in OpenAI's Help Centre if the setting is not immediately apparent in your account.
Should your business opt out?
The decision depends on the level of control your campaigns require, the quality of your measurement and your appetite for testing automated creative.
For some businesses, creative enhancements may be worth testing. A campaign with straightforward product messaging, reliable tracking and limited regulatory constraints could benefit from more contextually relevant copy.
For others, retaining control is the sensible starting point. The decision should be based on your business requirements. If you would like to speak to a member of our team for more information around this, we’re happy to help.
| Consideration | What to do |
|---|---|
| Regulated claims or mandatory disclaimers | Opt out where you cannot guarantee appropriate wording and approval |
| Active creative or landing page tests | Consider opting out to protect the validity of your test |
| Complex conversion tracking | Check destination URLs and attribution before enabling enhancements |
| International campaigns | Review translations, local pricing and market-specific terms |
| Straightforward campaigns with reliable measurement | Consider a controlled test if the risks are acceptable |
How to measure the impact if you keep enhancements on
If you decide to use creative enhancements, measurement needs to go beyond looking at the overall campaign results.
Start by recording your baseline performance before the change. Include the metrics that matter to the business, such as qualified leads, sales, revenue and profitability, alongside impressions, clicks and conversion rates.
Then establish a review process.
- Check the creative - Where examples are available, compare the original copy with the versions appearing in the market.
- Audit destination pages - Confirm that traffic reaches appropriate pages and that tracking parameters and conversion events work correctly.
- Monitor commercial outcomes - Do not judge success solely on click-through rate or the number of conversions reported by the advertising platform.
- Keep testing disciplined - Where practical, compare similar campaigns with enhancements enabled and disabled, accounting for differences in audience, budget and delivery.
- Document changes - Record when settings change and investigate significant movements in performance rather than automatically attributing them to the feature.
It is also important to recognise the limits of the available evidence. If every creative variation cannot be previewed or reported separately, a campaign-level comparison will not tell you exactly which wording drove the result.
The objective is not to eliminate every uncertainty. It is to understand what can be measured, identify where visibility is missing and make decisions based on the evidence available.
The wider question: how much control should AI have over your advertising?
ChatGPT Ads creative enhancements are part of a broader shift in digital marketing. Advertising platforms are moving beyond automating bids and placements towards making more decisions about the messages audiences see.
That can create genuine opportunities. AI can help adapt content to different contexts, reduce repetitive work and make advertising more responsive to customer needs.
But a platform's ability to optimise an advert does not automatically mean it understands a brand's commercial priorities, compliance requirements or wider marketing strategy.
Those responsibilities still sit with the business and the people managing its advertising.
The strongest approach is not to reject automation outright, nor to accept every new feature because it is presented as an improvement. It is to establish what the feature can change, define the boundaries it needs to operate within and assess its results against meaningful business outcomes.
For ChatGPT Ads, that means making an informed decision about creative enhancements before the default changes, checking the settings at both account and campaign level, and ensuring that measurement can support whatever decision follows.
