Getting to Know You... Gill Sherwin, Best of British Beer

Mike Blackburn

This month we caught up with Gill Sherwin, Owner of Best of British Beer.

So Gill..

What Led You to a Career in e-Commerce?

Lots of things. Naively, I thought low overheads and relatively low cost to enter the market. Once we had tested the market we realised this was something we could really scale up. If Im honest, the thought of working from home appealed hugely. We also wanted a business that we could work on together and e-commerce selling beer fit the bill.

Who Inspires You in Business and Why?

Maria Bourke, MD of Lets Get Healthy. She swapped a board position at a bank to create a business that delivers companies massive savings, all by focusing on the wellbeing of their staff.

To give up a lucrative career during a recession to do something you believe in is so brave and shes helped loads of people to get healthy along the way.

What Item Could You Not Do Without Everyday?

Bottle opener.

What Animal Best Describes You and Why?

Horse. Loyal and hardworking but headstrong, temperamental and need to be handled carefully during stressful times.

What is Your Biggest Achievement to Date (In Life or Business)?

In business, getting our products into Selfridges ranks pretty highly. Im also really proud to be a judge in our local business awards after we won ‘Entrepreneur of the year in 2012. Its a real privilege to learn about other peoples business plans and challenges.

If You Didn't Go Down this Career Path Where Do You Think You Would Be?

We had so many ideas before we set up Best of British Beer, maybe one of them as I would definitely be self employed, I had come to that point in my career. We considered a farm with lots of fancy chickens laying coloured eggs. That would have been loads of fun. Think there was also a plan for a Llama theme park but that may have been planned during a night in the pub.

Here are the Quickies...

Films or Books?

Tea or Coffee?

Tea, Earl Grey

Tomato Sauce or Brown Sauce?

Brown sauce.

Dressed Up or Dressed Down?

Used to be dressed up. I work in a warehouse now. If I dress up, they look at me really suspiciously.

Hot or Cold?

I'm Scottish. I have a real affection for cold weather and layers and layers of knitwear.
