Unblocktober Returns - #WFH Edition

Liz Walmsley

I-COM is taking part in Unblocktober for the second year running, but this time with a twist.

Unblocktober is a world-first environmental initiative to encourage individuals and businesses to be more responsible with what they do, and do not, flush down toilets and sinks.

The campaign aims to halt the environmental damage being done daily to our rivers and seas, particularly from the creation of fatbergs and proliferation of plastic pollution. Both of these issues are fuelled by inappropriate items such as wet wipes, condoms and food being thrown away down drains.

Graham Allchurch, head of digital marketing, said: “Last year I-COM took part in the awareness month as a business, a company-wide effort to ensure that nothing went down the drains in the office that shouldn’t be going down the drains.

“This year, things are going to be a little different. While many of our staff are in the office - in a socially-distant way - and I-COM is taking part again as a company, this time we’re putting the emphasis on each of our staff members to do their bit.

"With so many of us working from home this year, we’re asking everyone to take the messaging from Unblocktober into their homes so that their whole household - partners, children and housemates - can take part and put those messages into action.”

In taking part, I-COM pledges to not put 16 specific items down their sinks or toilets throughout the month of October:

  • Cooking oil - pre or post-cooking
  • Margarine
  • Butter
  • Lard
  • Cooking sauces and condiments
  • Food - even crumbs
  • Wet wipes
  • Tampons, applicators and wrappers
  • Sanitary/menstrual pads and towels
  • Nappies
  • Condoms
  • Cotton buds
  • Contact lenses
  • Bandages and plasters
  • Razor blades
  • Dental floss

I-COM and CSR Campaigns

Unblocktober was designed by I-COM in 2019 as part of a corporate social responsibility campaign for Lanes Group. The drainage solutions provider works on up to 600 fatbergs projects every month, witnessing firsthand the impact of the nation’s careless treatment of drains and sewers.

Last year, 4,500 people took part, with support from 50 prominent organisations - including the UK’s leading utility companies, the Environment Agency, Water UK, and the Marine Conservation Society. In total, some 1.5 million people were reached online.
